Understanding the difference between Carpentry and Joinery;
Many people are not familiar with the differences between a joiner and a carpenter. A joiner normally would be referred to as a cabinet maker i.e. bespoke furniture maker, whereas a carpenter would be best recognised on site 1st and 2nd fixing of heavier carpentry such as framing and roofing. This is a common question asked as to whether there is actually any difference between the two.
Both joiners and carpenters have many shared traits. For instance, they are both widely recognised within the construction industry as carpenters, however, they are classified as to separate trades as referred to above, the main reason for this is generally the techniques used are quite different, where a joiner would join wood together to form the desired outcome, a carpenter would nail and screw to reach the desired goal.
Further explained;
Joiners would most commonly carry out fabrication within a workshop, and then release to the site carpenters to install, the most common items crafted are, staircases, window, doors, and fitted furniture, etc. this is often the case due to the heavy tools and machinery required, site carpenters generally have much lighter and more portable tools enabling them to work in and around the site or home. A carpenter, however, tends to specialise in larger elements such as constructing and fitting roof trusses, stud work and floors on-site, by cutting and fitting them together, using a range of materials and tools.
There will always be some form of a cross over between both trades due to the fact of shared material knowledge and in some cases, the technique and tools required to undertake the task as these basic skills would have been studied during training and accreditation.
When making initial contact the question should be asked of the company thus ensuring company and tradesman possess the correct qualifications to complete your required task. A good example and rule of thumb to follow is a carpenter is the fitter and the joiner is the maker, so the joiner makes your cabinet and the carpenter installs it.
A common view on how to distinguish between joiners and carpenters is that joiners do not use nails or glue for their work, as their work is ‘joined’ together, hence the name. Because of this, their items are usually more expensive as more craftsmanship and skill goes into their work, as well as taking longer to construct.
Carpentry and joinery, therefore, should be categorised under two different trades, however, there is indeed a lot of overlap in their extremely high skilled work.
AN Contract Services Ltd we employ both carpenters and joiners and therefore offer a wide range of craftsmanship to suit all of your needs.
